BACKGROUND TO THE MYSTERY
On October 29, 2007 a fisherman found a plastic box
on a marshy sandbar in an area known as Greens Cut near
Greens Lake, where there is a break in the barrier separating West
Galveston Bay from the Intracoastal Waterway. The cut is about five
miles southwest of the Galveston Causeway
and only several thousand feet from Galveston Bay as it opens out into
the Gulf of Mexico. The inlet at Galveston is the gateway to the big
port of Houston and is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world
with lots of ocean going traffic.
The box wasn't all that remarkable. It was
a 92 quart blue Sterilite model 1842 box with black handles. What was
interesting was the content of the box. The fisherman who opened the box would
be
shocked to find the body of a dead girl inside. The girl
was aged 2-5 and had clearly been dead for some time. Police reports say
she had been dead for at least 2 weeks.
This story immediately caused lots of
speculation about who this girl might be and in the subsequent days at
the beginning of November, 2007,
the Galveston Police Department issued more information about this
girl:
1. Girl is white and age approximately
2-5.
2. Wavy blonde to light-brown hair to the
middle of her back.
3. Child was wrapped in plastic bags.
4. The autopsy showed that the girl had
skull fractures.
5. No other trauma was found.
6. The box was hidden in the bay for
several weeks.
7. Weight between 25 & 30lbs.
8. Height 32 to 35 inches.
9. She wore a pink or red cropped shirt
and matching skirt. The top was a pullover with three quarter length
sleeves and the bottom was a broom skirt. The clothes were believed to
come from Target Stores and were Cherokee brand size 2T.
10. Her shoes were Athletic Works trainers
(Tiara model) with pink flower decorations that
lit up and flashed. The shoes were available at Walmart Stores and
were size 8½.
11. The girl wore panties with a Disney label inside
and a figure that appeared to be a princess on the outside.
12. The container was a blue Sterilite-brand model 1842
92-quart tote locker, with a black handle.
